Wingshooting Opportunities

When most people think of hunting in South Africa, they think of the majestic Kudu, the ever-present and gorgeous Springbok, vast herds of Wildebeest or the symbol of Africa, the Zebra. But few think of packing a shotgun for a safari.

What most people don’t realize, there are great wingshooting and waterfowl opportunities to be had in South Africa.spurwinggoose

Depending on the time of year, great waterfowling can be had for species rarely if ever encountered by most “duck hunters.”

Shoot the largest of all geese, the Spurwing Goose. This goose is unique in that it has a bony wing protrusion that is quite sharp, do make sure this goose is down for the count before you pick it up!

Hunt other waterfowl like the African Shellduck, the African Whistling Duck, the Yellowbilled Duck, African Snipe and even Ethiopian Snipe!yellowbilledduck

Then there’s the “Upland” species of game birds. Francolin are a swift winged challenge, kind of a cross between a Hungarianswainsonsfrancolin Partridge and a Bobwhite Quail. Four different species of Francolin range our hunting concessions, the Greywing, the Redwing, the Orange River and the most populous, the Swainson’s Francolin.

Even though they’re everywhere, if you want a real challenge, try guineafowlwalking up a flock of Guinea Fowl! These tasty birds, the size of a chicken are incredibly difficult to get within gun range, and when they take to the wing, they fly much faster than you’d think!

If you’re not that adventurous or athletic, a fine way to relax from Plains Game hunting is to set up in a grain field and pass shoot doves and pigeons. Tough to shoot and fine table fare, the amount of doves and pigeons will soon have your shotgun barrel HOT!
