Ahh, the MacNab, an achievement of a legendary Scottish poacher John MacNab, who boasted that he could poach a Salmon, a brace of Grouse and a Stag in one day on his Lord’s property! Attempt what could quite possibly be the ultimate Outdoor Challenge in South Africa, the “South African MacNab.”Here in South Africa, we do things a little differently than they do in Scotland.



A good Mountain Reedbuck

Grab your rifle and start out the day in search of a Mountain Reedbuck. While not as large as a Stag, Mountain Reedbuck are a shy and elusive quarry. Spend part of the day stalking these “Ghosts of the Hills” and bag a good one as quick as you can. Remember, you have other things to do today!

Once your Reedbuck is down, replace the rifle with a shotgun. Now, it’s your task to shoot a brace of Francolin! For the North American hunters that have never heard of Francolin, they are an African gamebird roughly halfway between the size of a Ruffed Grouse and a Bobwhite Quail. Fast flying and challenging to shoot, you need to bring down two of these tasty little fowl to complete the second leg of the “MacNab.”

Flyfish the beautiful South African streams for Trout or the hard-fighting Yellowfish, a species of African gamefish that is said to fight two to three times as hard as any trout of comparable size!
