ABA district 119 fished lake Conroe on Saturday February 27th. It was ugly!
11 total anglers including 1 local lake expert/regular/jackpot angler.
7 - 0'd, zip, nada, including me and my non-boater
4 – weighed in 1 fish each.
1 – 5+ won the tournament and big fish
1 – 4+ took second
2 – 3+ got nothing but angler pride and bragging rights over 7 others.
The local jackpot angler zeroed as well though he reported losing several good fish at the boat… Mmmmmhummmm….
Both myself and my non-boater caught one catfish each. However! I should get some kind of award for the way I caught mine. Chunking a 3/4oz Lure Jensen in 5' of water. I got hung-up…. finally got it loose to discover a fish on. Notify non-boater "fish on!". He scrambles for the net… Fish comes to surface…. I see "catfish". Non-boater puts net down and goes back to fishing. I get catfish to boat. Now for the award. This fish did not have a hook in it. The 20# braid had formed a 1/2-hitch over the tail of the fish and not the whole tail. This half-hitch was around the upper half of the tail that forms the 'Y' of the tail.
I never did spoon or drop-shot. Wind was blowing pretty stinkin' good and would of made spooning where I had marked possible spots pretty difficult. Oh yeah, it was cold too – 37 at blast-off. So I wasn't hankering to post-up out in the cold wind for a maybe.
Winning fish came from less than 3' of water in the back of a cove on a Mann's -1 crankbait. 58 degree water temps and fairly muddied up.
Next stop Coletto Creek 3/13-14. That fisherie should be smokin' hot by the time we get there in two weeks. Forcast is for warm weather leading up to the tournament. It's the southern most lake district 119 fishes. "Should" take 20+ to win that one.
