On Kentucky Lake, largemouth and smallmouth have to be 15 inches.  Spotted bass have no minimum length, but some tournaments do impose a length limit.  You'd have to check with each tournament director to insure that there isn't a minimum tourney length.

Lil Mule, it bites that you couldn't find the right combination to get some keepers in the boat.  Oh well, better luck next time!  At least you got out and don't you get some points for at least fishing?

Sounds like a right tough day on KYL… What's the minimum on that lake? 12-14? We hit close to 70degrees today here but windy.

Talked to a friend of mine that fished a T today on the lake we'll be on next weekend. He and his partner ended up with 3 fish between 6-7#s but didn't even weigh in. 21+ won it and the guy I'm battling for AOY in our district had 17.5#s. That guy is good on that lake especially. Gonna be tough to beat next week I'm'a bettin'. The water temps started off @ 58 and never really got much above 60. But… all next week is supposed to be in the low to mid 70's. If that happens and the water temps. get into the low 60's at blast off…. that lake is just waiting to explode.

LM… when's your next T???

I was right whatever bait they would have hit left it at home or on a sporting goods shelf still,I did so good they wrote me  a Blank check.

Fella I drew was from Benton and like i would ,he headed home to fish by the 68 bridge, countless shorts and finnaly he came in the last hr back to cypprus bay where he proceded to get three keeepers on a jerkbait of rather odd colors, they would occasionaly hit mine or folllow to the boat and wave bye. What did manage to hook themselves were a tad short.

Air temp 22 f in that first long run,43 f water when landed I thawed out about 1/2 hr later.

Warmest water found was 47f.

Leader had lil over 14 lbs when I left.

LOL, when I was actively guiding, you should have seen what people thought they "needed" for a one day trip!  It was amazing and appalling at the same time!

When Lil Mule and I go out in his boat, I bring four rods, two light spinning rods and two baitcasters.  That covers the basics for me, not well, but it does kind of get the job done.

I add to that a tackle bag that contains four Plano boxes.  One box has hooks and sinkers, one box carries Zoom Flukes, another has 5 inch stick baits, and the final box has my Secret Weapon spinnerbaits and BuzzR Baits.

I'll usually add a Pop R, a Spro Frog, a couple crankbaits and a bag or two of worm type soft plastics.

And that's all I figure is polite to bring along when I'm the guest in a boat…

Had a non-boater which is also a friend of mine on our last tournament. We'd never fished together. He brought a tackle store…errrr… bag that would not even fit in the big compartment on the Gambler. And – that compartment is huge. Wasn't a real big deal though we just put on the floor between the consoles and manuvered around it.

Had one guy one time that must'a had 10-12 rods plus tackle. The rods were in vinyl zip-up covers which included reel covers, plus a ton of tackle PLUS a small cooler… I drew the line at the cooler.

I travel light when going as a non-boater. One small softside that holds 4 3600 series boxes. it has pockets on the outside that hold my plastics. Both boaters I fished with at the Nationals were smilin' when I put  this minimal stuff in the boat. I usually take: Jig rod, C'rig rod, finess rod, Rat-l-trap rod(works well with chug bugs and flukes). When the top water bite is on I add one specialty rod which is my spook rod.

Lucky charm,whars me lucky charm?

I have a problem anymore placing things where I wont lose them yet cannot find when needed.

Good Luck!

We're all at a bit of a disavantage when non-boating. You just can't take it all. But… being a non-boater is better than not going at all!!!!

When I go as a non-boater I take only my 4 highest confidence baits. Most folks aren't fond of chunking big crank baits so I seldom take them but at the Nationals I talked to the boater and found out what we're gonna be fishing and that ended up being big cranks, c-rig, and 3/4-1oz jig plus I had my small crankbait set up with me – just in case. Ended it up throwing it some but didn't stick anything with it.

Oh, I'm not saying we do badly together, as we've always caught fish, and often times some pretty decent ones.

What I meant was that there have been times when I think a crankbait or a Recoil Rig might have worked even better, and due to space in my traveling kit, didn't have them along.  I know that I have just about everything I might need in my boat, and being a non-boater means I (or you in this case) can't have everything along.

So what you're going to have to do is try to think what you'll need and have a little bit of everything that you might need, but not in the quantities that might be normally in a boat…

Actually we dont really do all that bad together ,generally when we have to hunt for what will ,everyone else is as well.

And most of our trips have contained keepers, some of those last trips we each limited when one thinks about it.

On that one swan bay point we each got two keepers, you got another going down the bank with a tube(smallmouth) then a drum.

The bridge yielded about two each and our ledge hole with the point got us about two each, you even more, as i took several photos of largemouth being flipped.

Many of our short fish are over 14 in,back on the ohio river that short would be a kicker.

Yeah, I can certainly understand that feeling!  I know how I feel when I fish from your boat and only have four Plano 3700 boxes with me.  I'll be out there and then I'll think of something that might work and then remember that it's in my boat!

I worked on organizing the boat today and cleaning it up some.  I didn't get too far, but at least now I have all the rods in the boat that I want in there.  And if I need a specialty rod or two, I'll just transfer rods from the rack in the Man Cave onto the deck of the boat and strap them down if/when I need them.

I'd hate to have to fish a tourny with limited gear aboard as a non-boater!

BUT, Good Luck tomorrow!
