Retrieve wrong,or frog wrong or color wrong, and a DBBB,as for the fluke they are a decent follow up,I use the super magnum.
Often they get to where they pester a floating frog in or during a front, blow up at times making a real racket yet do not actually take.
Steve and I both know the cure.It was he not I that happened upon that cure.
Id a camped on that both days, and yes I blank often mostly due to the boater refusing to let me fish my water, then angling the boat so I cant even fish his.

Ah bet you just didnt hold your frog right.
LOL…. I'm sure that was it….. The frog didn't catch any fish but what it did do was draw hits then I'd follow that up with a fluke and catch the non-keepers that had been pestering the frog!

I did win on Sunday… Just missed big fish by .19#s.
On the first day I made a really stupid decision. There are two rivers/creeks that feed this lake. Early Friday I went up the first river and did very well. Just a tad later in the day I went up the second river and caught my second biggest fish while prefishing but that was the only keeper I had up the second river. On tournament day the place I wanted to start up the first river was occupied when I got there. I fished the adjacent pocket as I had planned to do , this is the stupid part, then I ran up the second river and spent approximately 5 hrs going several miles up a creek. I caught a ton of non-keepers that kept me there hoping to get in front of bigger fish that never happened. On the second day I spent the entire day up the first river. The bite was very slow but when I caught'em they were good fish. The allure of the creek I spent 5 hours in was: Lilly pads, grass, laydowns, well defined channel and catching smaller fish on a fairly regular basis. The place looks like it should'a held a ton of good fish – but it didn't.
When I start a tournament my mental process is to fish for 5 bites, quality bites. So if I don't get bit hours on end I'm not too concerned. If I get to around 1pm and have no fish in the boat… then I get concerned.

Great report Doug! What in the heck happened on Day One??? It seems to me that you're too good of an angler to blank on fish like that.
Day Two sounds much more like it! While you didn't win, you finished in the money at least.

Not bad when a screw up saves the day,one backlash and a grounded or up against the bank boat, net result a 6 plus, without that one doubt if it would have paid much if any.
I should be so lucky, sounds like ky lake almost wind wise, good results overall dont ya think.

Roller Coaster weekend! Only way I can describe it… Oh Yeah… in a hurricane.
Friday pre-fishin'…. The wind was relentless ALLLL DAAAYYYYYY LOOOONG! In the 25-30mph range. Good thing it's a rather small lake(by Texas standards) and it's narrow as well… Shall we say boat control was an ISSUE! Cold front came through… Temps dropped… Barometric pressure shot up…. And…. still managed to boat 5 solid fish for somewhere around 15-16#s. Not too bad…. Figuring it'll take 20 to win but when I found fish… I left. So figure I could'a done a little better.
Saturday Tournament #1 – ZERO wind. Water temp at blast off – around 63 degrees. Fished as hard as I always do. Chunked what I chunked the day before. Net results(did I say NET?) don't need no stinkin' net when you bring back a Zero, ZIP, Nada, Nuttin'. Took only 11+#'s to win. 5.5 was big fish.
Sunday Tournament #2 – Zero Wind – water temp at blast off 63-64 degrees. Determine not to have a repeat performance of yesterday I very near left all of my rods but 4 at the cabin – but I didn't. Started fishing at the ramp. One of my plans was to keep a bait in the water all day long – and I did that fairly well. I start off with a Frog, 5″ swim bait and a frog(lotta grass in this lake)…. First hour not a bite… then… a 2.5 with the swim bait.
Fire up engine and make first run of the day…. run to place I wanted to start the day before but it was taken… Swim bait, jig and rattle trap working back into fairly deep pocket. Get almost to the back… pitch a jig – tug….tug…. HOOK SET….. boat a 4#er…. Awww things or looking a tad better. Get all the way to the back…. far as boat can go… I see 3 beds but no fish.. Pitch towards first bed….tug…tug…. swing ann'a miss…. But I see the fish… may or may not would have kept… Chunk towards other beds… no action. Fish the other side of the pocket back out to main lake alternating mostly with swim bait and jig – well Duhhh…. only two baits that have caught anything yet! Get to mouth of pocket… fire up engine run about 1/2 mile…. Deep bank where river channel cutts into it…. OH yeah…. and the wind is howling again…. came outta no where and stayed with us the remainder of the day….
Pitch jig a few times… nothing… Pitch it again… backlash… Day'um…. Start picking out birdsnest… wind blows the boat into the bank…. Get backlash out…. I've been blown over my line and I want to get it in before messing with the trolling motor…. reel in…. Pull line…. something pulls back… SET HOOK…. rod doubles up under the bow…. Finally get the fish on the bank side of the boat…. almost not enough room to put the net it…. It would'a made a good video! 6.21#er in the boat… Ahhh… thing are gettin' better all the time – except for the wind…. It is absolutely horrid! If I get the jig to land where I want it the line get's blown into tree limbs…. I keep the line outta the limbs but then the jig lands in dead water….
Still on the trolling motor… work past deep main lake bank and start working a small cove…. Trees in the middle at about 5' deep…. Chunk jig… Tug…Tug…. HOOK SET… 4#er in the boat… That was probably around 1pm… my last keeper of the day. I really…really… really tried to get that 5th fish as I thought I had a shot at winning if I could limit out….. But alas…. went to the scales with 4 fish. Weighed in a total of 15.61#s… Good enough for the win. Goto beat on big fish mine went 6.21…. got beat by 6.40… Dang'it…. Yesterday a 6.0 would'a taken it….
Sooooo summary is…. 15+ during practice, 0 – on Day one and 15+ on day two… I left the house with 300.00 I returned home with 394.00. I paid cash for everything but gas so I ended up just about even money for the weekend – which while not great…. is far better than a sharp stick in the eye… or even a dull stick for that matter!

Well it certainly sounds like you should havea great two days on the water. I tried fishing down by the landing today for a little while and didn't do all that well only catching a couple of short fish.
We've been having some great weather the past two days, but now it's supposed to start cooling down and raining up here for the entire weekend!
I wish we could put together a week of good weather now that I have most of the boat back together and working.
You have a great tournament and report back on Monday, ok?

Will be heading out for a pre-fishing day tomorrow then have 2 one days on Coletto. By all rights the lake ought'a be just bustin' with fish. Had a warming trend all week and a smattering of warm rain. Come Sunday afternoon the tale willl be told. Could be a barn burner! Should take any more that a scan of the Temp gauge as soon as the boat is in the water to have a clue… We'll see!!!!
