Whatchu talkin' bout Willis?  Jack O' Conner wrote reams about the .270!  I don't recall a single article about the .257 Roberts or the .243…

The .30-30 is a great round east of the Mississippi, but the only guys out west that I see with .30-30 rifles are using them as saddle guns or they keep them behind the seat of the pickup and shoot deer/coyotes and the occasional elk from the ditch…

MY .25-06 is similar to others that I've seen.  With a 26 inch barrel, the overall length of the gun is almost four feet, and the weight with sling, scope, and mounts is pushing on 12 pounds.  It's a great rifle, but it's no featherweight!

Agree it 257  and 243 were jack oconnors favorites, sort of overlooked and looked down upon due to it being attempted on much larger game than it should have been.

When used on appropriate targets nails them, the touted 30/30 which was a western round is best suited to brush.

I once owned an argentine mauser 7mm that was a great deer gun although a tad long.

That 25/06 being a short rifle is easy to carry and tad lighter as well.

Is one deer killing machine!  Ever since I built the rifle from an old WW1 Mauser action, I'd been itching to shoot a deer or two with it.  And this year, I finally got a chance to find out how well it works.

Well sir, I've now taken two deer with it and the total distance from point of impact to where I picked the deer up is a grand total of 0 feet!  Both deer have given up faster than the French Army and dropped in their tracks.  I'm impressed as all heck with this rifle.

And the nice thing is, being a .25-06 shooting a 120 grain bullet, the recoil is so mild that I've watched the deer fall.

If you're looking for a flat-shooting caliber that appears to be highly accurate, easy to shoot and pure death on deer, look no further than the .25-06 caliber…
