Never made it over to that area except for Hocking Hills area. Loved that area and I am sure the rest of that part of the area is about the same.

Chesapeake,Proctorville, area directly across from Huntington,W.Va.,however have been all over from Bass Bay,cjbrown, salt fork, seneca and loved Deer creek,Fished for salmon in lil creek at pa line, and for trout in the mad (washington courthouse) and had the ohio river next to me.
Had to travel a bit to go to a T,wife not healthy wanted to be where I could go catch fish minutes from the house and actually be able to eat them,as she does like fish.
Did some research and landed here.

Hey Lil Mule, where were you in Ohio? I lived in Cleveland, Kent and Columbus. IN all about 10 years. Loved it, but the winters up there could be brutal as well! Especially up in Clevelnad and that lake effect snow!
I remember the 09-10 snow storm! We have a hill in Clarksville where people could not get up and the police were pushing people up the hill! I had just bought my AWD Subaru Forrester and had no problems! Got to school and THEN they cancelled classes!!!

Ive owned 4 w drives in the past living in ohio, here both front wheel drive cars did ok.
I tend to get stuck more in mud than slide anywhere, and no problems on these ramps as not that steep, one port road is more so than others but np so far there, and one is broken off at the end and have dropped off it in nov at birdsong, yet 2 wheel got it back up.
Definately if fishing around drainage ditches obion canals or rivers it would be a great + due to mud, some years we get snow and ice, this year not enough to make 1 snow cone,in the 2 miles from my home to rt 79.
So when I got mine was looking more at what I could buy used for the money I wouldnt feel bad about having my wife aboard as its also the second vehicle now and every once needed for just transportation not hauling.

Oh, it's a sinking feeling! It hasn't happened since I got a 4wd truck, but I've seen it happen and it isn't pretty. I've also pulled a truck or two up a ramp when the truck just didn't have enough "oomph" to do the job.
I think the most enjoyable experience I've had with my truck since moving to Tennessee was during one of the snowstorms of 09-10. There's a stoplight on a hill and when traffic stopped, no one could get moving! I slipped my truck into 4 wheel and just cruised around all the traffic that was spinning, slipping and sliding….

Yeah I can't imagine the feeling of having your boat AND your truck sliding backwards into the drink! I was looking at the Toyota Tacoma. It will pull 6,000 lbs, which should be more than enough for what I want and still have some decent mpg!
I don't think I will need it for snow down here!

tndiver said:I am looking for a new truck and wondered how often you use 4WD for pulling a boat? Of course it is nice to have if we ever get a blizzard and for some off-roading, but I was also thinking about the gas mileage. I also need a 4 door model with the family.
Since I moved to Tennessee, I've used the 4wd less than I did when I was guiding in Wisconsin. But I have used it at times when either the ramp was slippery with algae and when I had to bring the boat up a steep ramp. Part of why Lil Mule hasn't seen me lock in is because it's so seamless, that I can lock in, get the boat moving and shift out without any apparent change.
When I lived up north, we had shorter, steeper ramps, a lot more unimproved ramps, and I guided late into the season, so iced up ramps were a possibility and I used the 4wd a lot more.
But MY feeling is that the little I lose in fuel economy is made up in peace of mind. I'd much rather have it and not need it than to find I need it and don't have it! There's nothing that is more rotten feeling than having the rear wheels slip and the boat isn't moving!
My truck is a 2006 Chevy Silverado extended cab with the 6.0 litre engine. I can pull ANYTHING, but it comes at the price of 12-14 mpg. I know guys with the 5.3 litre v8 that are getting 18 – 20 mpg regular running and about 12 – 14 when towing a fairly large boat.
I can live with the milage I get, my truck is paid for… And it gave me a great excuse to buy a motorcycle for when I'm not towing the boat!

I dont own a 4 w drive currently, have had them seldom locked in unless around mud.
Many of the trucks available are crew cabs and many have a second or are 4 door.Mine isnt but a 2 lean seat forward canuse the rear, since just the two of np,use it for groceries and or dogs etc.
Dogs havnt lodged a complaint as yet,it or they do have less leg room, long trip be hard on someone back there if more than 1.
Steves is 4w drive cant recall him ever having to lock in with the boat attached while down here.
Possibly unimproved ramp or a broken one and fall off the end at winter pool, but ive managed to pull mine out with a 2 wh dr.

Yeah, from what I remember, mine got fairly decent milage. I only wish my Chevy got better milage, but it's paid for, so I can buy a LOT of gas for the price of one truck payment….
And besides, it gave me a good excuse to buy a motorcycle…

Dang right that's an outdoor toy! It's just a "Big Boy" toy… And it's a pretty nice looking truck!
You'll like that truck. I had a 1998 Dodge pickup and it towed my boat great! It'll do a better job of towing, and equally important, STOPPING the boat when you're heading down the road.
So did you trade in the SUV to get the truck?
And now you can come out to my house and haul a bunch of firewood home. Let me know when you want to come out, I'll start cutting!
