I would say that in order for an aspiring tournament angler to equip himself minimally for a tournament, he'd need the following rod and reel combinations.

A 7' 6″ flipping stick – This can do additional duty as a frog rod as well as a Carolina Rig rod.  Spool this reel with 50 – 65 lb. braided line.

A 7' medium heavy, fast tip baitcasting rod – This can be used for spinnerbaits, crankbaits and Texas Rigged worms.  Spool this reel with 30 lb. braid.

A 7' medium spinning rod – This could be used for unweighted trick worms, Zoom Flukes, shakey head worms and other finesse baits.  Spool this with 10 lb. braid.

For reels, I really like Shimano products, most of my baitcasters are the old green Curados, but I also like the Chronarch, the Citica and Cardiff reels.  For spinning reels, I love my 2500 Shimano Stradic 2500s….

I got a late start in life on strictly bass fishing, had previously fished for just about anything that swam when not trout fishing, dreaming of opening my own shop one day say on the Davidson,or the White river.

An industrial accident left me with less than steller preformance with one hand, and my method of fly tying was with both.I could tie a decent royal coachman out of spun deer hair(sort of invented  by a fellow w.va),and it wouldnt sink.but as things go.

Then looked or switched to bass fishing with baitcasters as the lures were somewhat bigger and easier to make,(spinnerbaits, hair jigs, etc)

My first big bass T in aba was at kerr va,I left went that 500 miles with one bass rod and reel (bass pro),dozen or so lures and three bags of worms(39 years old). And thought I was doing well on eq back then.Ps I did weigh in.

Now days cant leave and go fishing with less than say four or five as something will malfunction, even back in the old days I carried a spare spool of line in case I had to respool on the water.A great many of my other fish type reels like abu garcia 5500 c found their way on bass rods in those early days, even to this day have two left I use for cranking.

So whats changed, everything but difference is caught more fish with less gear and less money involved way back then. And since I didnt know any better had a real nice time of it all.

My Kistler frog and slop special 89 bucks plus shipping of I thiink 18, carrot stix 90 then 12 for shipping as in same state,in case your wondering both rods purchased about year and a half ago

So what does an aspiring young angler or one just starting need in eq,a bass boat no as many T org will permit a nonboater on a draw.certainly would be on the wish list for later..Four to five rods one being a spare, and a few plano boxes of tackle, the rest is all in ones mind, only when we carry fortyseven different kinds of topwater baits do we not know what to throw.Colors white dark shiney nothing else matters.

So all of our years of experience seems to go out the window if a non boater, and one carries in hand what one will use all day long.It can at times,as a non boater we dont always get to choose what and where and how,the tackle one may have with them may not be the best for say when ,where and how.

Bottom line is take one for cranking, one for worming, one for deeper stuff worming or jigging and one for bringing them out of a jungle, then you should have at least one rod suitable for what you end up doing.
