Lil Mule and I finally got the boat into the water on Kentucky Lake. The water is still pretty high and the water clarity is dismal at best.
Because it looked like it was going to rain, we didn't run far from the landing, nor did we go fast! I'm sure there's a lot of still floating stuff out there to run over, and I just didn't feel like putting up with that today.
We had intended on catching some bream or maybe crappies, thinking that they'd be in the flooded timber. We were kind of right…
We weren't out on the water five minutes when my float went down. I set the hook and reeled in a channel catfish about a foot long. The next cast resulted in another cat, this time smaller. At about twenty minutes into the trip, my float went down again and I set the hook. One of my ultralight rods originally was intended to be a 3 wt flyrod, only I made it into a spinning rod. Well, the rod just doubled over and the drag started singing!
I knew it was a good fish (whatever it was) and I fought it up to the boat, only to have it dive underneath. I put as much pressure on as I could, and unfortunately it turned out to be too much pressure as the 4 lb. mono parted!
Oh well, I guess you can't win them all…
We ended up getting one decent bluegill, one small whitebass, and another catfish, about four or five pounds. Then the skies opened up and ended our day. Although lightning will do that to me!
