Well, as the subject line states, I've been out fishing three out of the past four days. And I've got to say that it's been tough out there lately.
First of all, we've had bright, bluebird skies, which is never easy fishing conditions. We've had very little wind to diffuse the light, there's been very little current flow so there's been little to concentrate the fish either.
The water temps have been decent, into the upper 60's, so there should have been some spawning activity, but up until today, I didn't see a single bed. Now today, I finally found one bass bed, and that's way up inside a small bay off of a larger bay. It had a buck bass and a female about three pounds on it, but I should have tried a Recoil Rig but didn't…
Up until now, almost all of the fish have come on mainlake points and gravel shorelines of the mainlake basin. Some of the bass were caught on Senkos, some on wacky rigged trick worms, and some on T-rigged trick worms. A few fish also came on flukes.
Up until today that is. Yesterday I threw a c-rigged lizard and caught one fish on that when the other rigs didn't produce like I think they should have. Today I threw the c-rig most of the day, and while some fish were caught in deeper water, most of the fish came from four feet or less of depth.
I did catch one three foot long gar tossing a wacky rigged stick bait. I snagged it in the tail and it fought like crazy!
While we didn't set the water on fire, we did reasonably well over the three days of fishing. While a lot of the fish were short, we did get some keepers every day and today was the best for legal bass. I believe I had three, my friend Moe had two and even Larry in the back of the boat landed a couple keepers. But the lake is starting to turn on and will only be getting better and better.
Now all we need is the grass to start growing! Once that starts coming up, the lake is going to be awesome!
