If you're comfortable with Royal Purple, then go ahead and use it. It's not like a two cycle outboard where you're burning the oil.
If they say go ahead and use 10w-30 and 75w-90 in your motor, then that's what I'd do and not worry about the fact that it's not a marine rated oil yet.
My guess is that they'll take the same oil and simply put it in a container that says "Outboard Oil."
That might be the case with the engine oil but the lower unit lube has "special" properties that enable it to still provide minimal lubrication while emulsified with water. 'Least that's what I read somewhere once upon a time!

Actually I do use Royal Purple in my Jeep, Tractor,Snow Blower. I have read a lot on RP and have heard nothing but great reviews on it. The only thing that I was concern about is that RP does not have the marine certified stamp. I have contacted the folks at RP and they said use 10w-30 and use the 75w-90 gear oil for the lower unit. They do have a license for the marine oil and will have a oil available in the near future.

I've heard of Royal Purple, but haven't tried it yet. But I have used Amzoil with great success, and from everything I've heard, Royal Purple is even better.
I have been using Mobil 1 in my truck and that's been fine so far too, over 70,000 miles and not a lick of trouble.
I think Andy that as long as you use a quality, name brand oil that you'll be fine.
But let us know what you've chosen and why, I am curious….

I use Royal Purple in my 2008 F150 and wouldn't use anything else. I tow a 7,000# enclosed trailer – ALOT, plus my boat. As an aside Mecury HighPerformance 2cycl oil, as is their DFI oil, a synthetic blend.
Royal Purple ain't cheeeeep but it's one of if not the best oils on the market. AMS Oil being one of the other'ns. Early on Mobil 1 synthetic had a number of problems related to engine failures, so I've read. I think they've got'em ironed out by now but….

Ive used synthetic actually bought at wally world was ok in my older omc, normally use straight 20wor30w oil ,even my hydtraulics take 20 w oil.Older omc are more tolerant of the types of oil they can use safely.
But the ficht engines dont like it as most dont contain the additives necessary(buy ficht oil for a fortune)
Different brands of oils let alone synthetic or organic in nature will give different rpm levels to your engine at full wot and sometimes even at idle the difference in an oil your engine likes better is about 100-150 rpm more.
No two different brand and model engines would be exact and yours is more akin to a car being 4 stroke, guess is a good brand of automotive oil of either synthetic or organic, whatever is your preferance.

I've used Amzoil products in the past and didn't blow up anything, so I'd have to say that it works just fine.
Anyone else got an opinion?

I have a 4-stroke 15 hP outboard (2006). I am a big fan of synthetic oil. Do you guys use synthetic oil in your outboards and lower units? If so, what brand?
Thanks,
Andy
