I'm thinking that if your new motor exceeds the Coast Guard rating plate for the boat, you're asking for trouble!

First of all, while the boat could probably take the 35, it's over the rating plate, so that means a couple of things.

First of all, you could get a ticket from a Game Warden or Coast Guard should your boat ever be inspected.

Secondly, should you be involved in an accident, your insurance company will NOT pay out any kind of claim.

Third, you open yourself up to a law suit of the worst kind!

I wouldn't do it!

But what I would do is use the 35 hp outboard as trading fodder on a 25 hp deal.  Or simply sell it outright and use that money for the right sized outboard.

I have a 14' grumman 4.4 utility boat. Is has a 15HP outboard, the max for this boat is 25. A friend gave me a 35 HP with electric start. I am thinking the 35 HP will be to much engine for my boat? What are your thoughts?
