The official show description simply says, "Episode 1 – Manitoba Bears & Bows – Come along with Steve as he travels to Manitoba Canada for his first spring black bear hunt with
Rupertsland Outfitters." But that doesn't even tell half the story.
To say it was an unusual and exciting hunt is an understatement! Deep in the bush in Manitoba, Canada with Rupertsland Outfitters, it was an adventure simply getting to the stands for the hunt. We would travel on atvs anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours just to get to the stands, and that was a ball in itself. It was during this hunt that I discovered a Polaris Sportsman 400 will float with me on it!
Hunting from treestands over bait is the way bears are taken in this trackless, flat, forested terrain. A hunter could spend days searching out this huge territory without a glimpse of a black bear; bait gives a hunter a fighting chance. And even then, it's not always easy. Bears can be wary creatures and a challenge to hunt, especially with a bow.
Of course me being me, I had to do my hunt a little different, even though I didn't write the script that way.
Every day we went out, we did see bears at the bait. Some days it was sows, sometimes cubs, and a couple times, Godzilla sized bears cruised through but knew something was "not right" with the setup and never gave me a shot.
But on the day I did fill my tag, it was in a way I never imagined.
I suppose I could tell all here in this blog, but wouldn't you rather see it happen than read about it? To find out the rest of the story, click on the SHOFTV button and scroll down to Episode 1 and give it a watch.
Then you tell me, is my wife correct in telling me I'm nuts?
