LOL, I think you'll find all the challenge you'll want here on Kentucky Lake, along with some of the finest fishing anywhere!

You'll be glad you made the trip…

O.K.

I see now, they are alomst right on top of each other.  They say you don't have to go far to find lots on nooks and crannies to fish, and I can see thats true.  Can't wait to go explore.  Good to hear they are starting to move up already.

I don't find bed fishing to be very challenging, but if they make it up on the beds before we get there it could be fun.  I would love to hang a big pre-spawn female a little deeper maybe.

Whatever the case, what I am really after is the wind racing over my bald skull, the sun shining, the smell of open water, and the sound of that baitcaster lettin a lure fly.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Hey Jim,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm not going to lie to you.  There's all kinds of hidden navigational hazards on Kentucky Lake!  But that's what you get when you fish and boat on a flooded reservoir…

My suggestion would be to watch the navigational markers that delineate the original river channel and when you're running all out, make sure to stay between the buoys.  It's easier said than done sometimes with how they have them located, but you'll get things figured out fairly quickly, I know I did.

But it can be nerve-wracking running on the lake at times, so keep an eye on your locator at all times, especially if you're not sure where you're going.

Will you need a spare lower unit?  I certainly hope you won't, but I would bring a spare prop if you have one.

Well yes a lot of hidden dangers but not as many up north,go slow think if you dont know what lies ahead stop.Lake is still winter pool all maps and even gps are at summer pool 5 ft higher.

I thought moors was in big bear,it is at that cove where the island is,but many islands near cove mouths all almost have pea gravel banks.

Fish nothing but this side or west side venture not to far out,as its the center thats shallow, yoou can run from there to teh dam or down to the 68 bridge without any problems,as its a back channel,it is when crossing over one has to be real carefull, and do so in a boat lane.

They occur by just about every major cove almost,so one can cross over and fish lbl side just have to do so in a boat lane.

If you get a ky lic its actually good main lake all the way down to Paris landing where we are located.

Fish are already shallow, use what ever you do back home it will work here as well, dont overlook crappie stakebeds,a lot of them up there in the coves a nice big worm tossed in gets an arm broke.

Thanks for the tip Lil Mule.  The Moors looks to be just north of the Big Bear, and should not be more than a few minute ride.  I will look for the pea gravel.

Is there a lot of hidden dangers on Kentucky Lake?  Should I bring a spare lower unit, or are things pretty safe?  I am not one of those guys that hits the throttle and runs ruff shod all over the place, but I have been known to bump a stump or two.

I have standard GPS for that lake, but nothing like Navionics or anything more specific.  I plan on being careful, but if there is any tricks to running this place I would love to know them.

It rained here last night and is supposed to continue.  First day I did not have to scrape the windows or run the defroster in a long long time.  Hope this warming trend continues.

LOL, Kentucky Lake certainly isn't like ANY lake in northern Wisconsin, that's for sure.  While I can learn just about any lake up north in a year or two, a person could easily spend his entire lifetime on this lake and never learn it all!  But that's what makes it an interesting lake, you can find new places to fish literally every time you go out.

It's lightly raining here today, but the temps are very mild and it certainly wouldn't be any hardship to fish in this.

I for sure don't envy the guys fishing Boom Lake for the Ice Fishing Championship!  While ice fishing can be fun, it won't be while it's raining!

The Moors is a decent resort one of the more popular ones up north, you will find an island at the mouth,it has  a good pea gravel bank.

Doubt if you will run into snow down here, but its been a strange year.

Should be 70 deg by then, was that here yesterday but raining now.

Do bring some rain gear as getting cold and wet isnt fun, even running on this lake wear it,as the blustery winds create a mist and running a boat through the waves brings up some on the deck as well.

Yes, Benton.  Wow, I had looked at the google map and just estimated, but if its really 60-70 miles north, holy cow thats a big lake!  I have a freind that has stayed there a couple times, and also stayed at a place called the moors.  He said he has some spots for me to try out.  I can safely say this will be the biggest water I have ever had my boat on.  Hope I can handle it!

Its been nice as hell up here for close to a week now.  Supposed to stay in the 40's and 50's and rain for two days starting tomorrow.  Just in time for the "World Ice Fishing Championship" being held this weekend on Boom.  What a mess thats going to be!  still 2 feet of ice on the lake, but by this weekend it will be 1 foot of ice and 1 foot of water.

Keep me posted on the weather, I am fearing a huge snowstorm the 3 days we get down there.  You know, In like a lamb, out like a lion stuff……

I will keep checking back

Wow, you really are a bit away if we're talking about the same place.  Is your place in Benton, Kentucky?  If it is, it's not 20 – 30 miles away, it's more like 65 miles away!

The weather has been absolutely beautiful recently, almost 70 degrees today.  We are expecting a little rain over the next couple days, but it should be nice again by the time you arrive.

I'm not 100% certain if I'll be available when you're down here (we're trying to buy a house), but if I'm free, we should get together for at least an evening.

Hey Steve,

Looks like we will be coming down on the 26th and leaving on the 29th.  Should arrive early to mid afternoon on Friday.  We are going to be staying at a place called Big Bear Resort.  Hunted around a lot and wound up with a great deal from this place.  Tried to book a tiny cottage, but they screwed it all up, so they upgraded us to a great big place for the same price!  Looks like a good 20-30 miles from Paris, but if you want to get together for dinner one night, or meet up on the lake somewhere let me know.

Can't wait to get down there, even though its been in the mid 40's to low 50's for about the last 4 days up here.  Got the boat all cleaned out, and taking it in for a checkup next week.

(And it still smells like I am trying to avoid vampires, after most of a winter of fresh air!)

You'd better be careful Jim!

If you come down here in April, you're likely to want to stay…

Paris in particular and Tennessee in general is a VERY friendly state and waves by total strangers is quite common.

I think that you'll like what Kentucky Lake has to offer should you decide to come down here.

Yes normally a jacket then one can shuck it when the sun comes up,it has been an abnormal year here just as cold and with as much snow as they would get in ten years.

So could possibly lag a tad this year,as for the food everything from a breakfast diner to steak houses and chinese or italian.Considerably more than whats available lakeside.

Water here can be rough, but launch ramps all over the lake just launch near where you desire to fish at.

Say april expect a small buck bass to hit about every 20 ft,with say one quality fish per day of about 3-4 pds, thats about average for someone who doesnt know the lake tossing just what you did or would back home at the  same water temp.

Oh and dont be surprised if people wave at you as they drive by,no they dont know you its just a friendly place.

Hello fella's

T-shirt weather sounds real good to me about now.  Up here that high 30's to mid 40's so I am betting its even better down there.  I have no problem with 1/2 hour drive, especially if better food is involved.

I will check out Paris on the map, and start buttering up the wife.  We are thinking of maybe leaving here on a Thurs. afternoon and maybe heading back on Monday.  That should give us a couple solid days on the water hey?  Would it be better to come during the week to avoid traffic on the lake?

Yep, you got me hooked on the JJ's Steve.  It helped me make it to the state tournament for our FLW club.

I finally took the time to sign back up to the site, and it looks great!  I will keep checking back and boning up on spring fishing Kentucky Lake.

Thanks Guys,

Jim

Agree Paris is but 1/2 hr away, and a tad cheaper with more places to eat at.

Normally late march fisrt of april is the start of spawn, think maybe due to the severe weather weve had be a tad later, yet once it warms up it does so quickly here.

Expect it to high water but not muddy, shirt sleeve weather from april on other than first thing in the morning,up until may we can get a frost still.

Water temp goes from say 64 to 72 in less than three weeks. And expect to get in line to launch your boat, even prior to dayliight. Its a quick line though,so just get your boat ready to go while in it.

Nice dock to pick up your pard on,again no one tarries, normally.

Taken third week of april when the bream fishing is at its peak.

I received a message from a friend of mine in Rhinelander.  Here's what he wrote…

Hey Steve!  I tried to get a message to you through facebook, but the whole thing is so F up right now I gave up.  A buddy and I are thinking about sneaking away from this snow hell and heading down to Kentucky Lake for a long weekend and a try for some bass.  If we came down could you recommend a good (cheap) place to stay and get us pointed in the right direction as far as the fishing goes?  We were thinking around the end of march, but if there is a "Best" time to come let me know when that would be.  This is all a pipe dream at the moment.  Drop me a note, I need to use up some of that Garlic stink juice I bought at the rummage sale. You got me hooked on the stuff, but now my boat smells like an italian whore house!

Hi Jim, I'm thinking that Mid March/Early April would be a prime time to be here on Kentucky Lake.  By that time, there should be bass on the beds, with some pre-spawn as well as some that have spawned, so you should be able to find bass in all of the spawning modes.

There are several places near the lake that you could stay at, or drive a little and save a lot.  In Paris, there are a couple motels that appreciate fishermen and have large parking lots with plenty of room for a bassboat.  The Super 8 is one that comes to mind right off the top of my head.  If I get into town, I'll try to write down the other places that are less expensive to stay at.

As for your boat smelling, I wish I could tell you that the smell goes away, and it does.  Just not as quickly as my wife would wish….

But JJ's Magic does work, doesn't it?  Cool
