I think it was just an idea that didn't work as well as they anticipated. 


I understand the concept of trim tabs quite well, but when a boat NEEDS them to perform, it's not a good design in my estimation. 


Trim tabs should be there to augment and enhance a hull, not be intergral to the design….

Nope… the point wasn't lost. A hull design incapable of performing basic hull requirements required the inclusion of trim tabs to rectifiy the problem. Don't know if you've ever seen the trim tabs on a Gambler but the hull @ the transom, port/starboard, is recessed and the trim tabs are installed in the recess. It is a neat install/placement as far as looks go but function went to hell in a hand basket. Because they're recessed there is no hull surface so basically without the pads deployed you're trying to launch the boat with only the pad surface area available to lift the stern and lay the bow over. It don't work!

Think the point was lost -no bassboat 20 some ft long should ever need them,it was some type of fix for an ill handleing boat or wrongly engineered one.Think they look odd,saw some on a hydrostream viper,very fast very manuerable boat,very costly and  a cheap  fix for the inherent problems of a  hull.

it's very easy to drive – much like a car. Max. speed I ever saw with the intimidator was around 76mph. Virtually no chine walk and turned like a sports car. Drive/ride/turning @ speed was similar to my 209 'cept my 209 is 5-7mph faster and doesn't porpose at any speed.

LOL, well to me, it sounds simply like poor hull design, nothing more, nothing less.  Although I've never been able to drive one…

I suppose it has trim tabs because the guy desigining the hull couldn't figure out how to lift/lay-over/and haul-butt with the bigger engines. Sad part is…. even with the tabs he only managed one-in-three. It will porpose at around 50mph w/o the tabs. The only way to stop it is to either deploy the tabs or nail the throttle. And nailing the throttle is not an immediate fix. And that's after tucking the trim all the way under trying to make it stop.

Yup… me too! If I fish 100 tournaments a year my engine will have have around 100-150 tournament hours on it counting idle time at the ramp and no waking in/out from the ramp – maybe that many.

LOL, I've said it before and I'll say it again.  Gambler makes one incredibly sexy looking boat, but I don't want one.  It seems like those boats are more for guys that like to go fast a lot and fish a little.


I'm more interested in fishing a lot and going fast a little….Cool

It was a lot like that at Amistad when I went there. Run 35mph get beat to death…. run 55-60… pretty decent ride. But it did take some suckin' up to get on top. Then… you make a slight course adjustment to turn into a creek… now you're quarterin' them suckers and there ain't no such thing as timin' nor "smooth" about it. But you are right! It does take some go'nads to get on top of some of that stuff but I'll usually giver'er a go 'til I get close to stuffin' it. That's when I figure there ain't no getting on top.


This 2007 Intimidator has the trim tabs. All well and fine but…. It takes forward motion for them to take affect. While they will keep you on plane at around 14-15mph and getting up n' over is a simple thing in decent water. When you're battling rollers on the main lake AND trying to get on the pad. It just doesn't happen. The hull is so poorly designed that it will not lift the stern until you reach a certain speed. Unfortunately that speed is greater than what it takes to get the boat airborne. The bow just will not come down under those conditions. Ask me how I know!

Uh here if one gets used to it and has the boat to do it with getting up in 30-35 mph wind and three fters isnt all that hard,its having both the knowledge and the boat.52 mph topped them out nicely in the jag,any more than 63 your out of timing again,less than 52 quite bimpy,more than 63 and quite wet eventully.And here the waves are generally higher than at pickwick,shallow water and three convergences at one place ky lake,bridge,tn river and big sandy all come together.
Havnt a clue as to how a gamler will run on it as see few around here,that could be saying something all by itself.But doubt it as the jag looked a lot like a gambler,just a tad lionger at 22 ft.
You will just have to find out,even if it looks like you cant at certain speeds one can just have to get up the nerve to get up an try it.
As far as 189 is concerned its mostly out of the wind,its just getting there and back is the problem,again something you will have to adress when you get here,nothing anyone can say can help get over the shock n awe if it hits the fan.Other than some seat time,which you wont aquire that soon.
One thing when they look three ft they are five,as so close together you dont see all of one,unless you see what the locals call a freak wave a lot taller,nothing freak about it just no other waves close by as something cancelled out the other two same wave you just see it all.

Yeah on Pickwick last year the 2nd practice day was 30mph n' gusting to who knows what. launched the Gambler several times that day but no more than anyone else was having to do. And that was at 30-35mph. Wasn't no "getting on top" that day. Don't know if you've been to Pickwick but it's a loooong narrow lake and it has plenty of time to build up rollers. That was the time they were pulling 50 billion cubic gallons through the gates in one direction and the wind was blowing in the same direction. Running with wind and current I clocked a land speed of 168.2mph! Running against it…. 15.3mph. Reality was…. running with I was around 81mph. running against cost 5-6mph drop.


I have never finished setting up the 225 Pro XS(transom/stringers did not respond well at all to the additional torque over the original 200Xri). May not get time this time either. Best clocking on Toledo Bend in a moderate chop was 80.2mph. I "think" the engine is still 1/2-3/4″ low and anticipate a final set up speed under ideal conditions to be around 83-85mph. Tournament loaded w/2 anglers is going to be in the 78-80mph range. Fill both livewells w/2 anglers and 77-78 is more than likely the max. I'll see.

Well out of the week your here its almost a certanty boat will get a stress test,at least once if not about three times,its also a stress test on the driver as they are packed very very close together,and from three directions get down inbetween two sets a 20 ft disapears,all but the passngers staying in view.And thats running in a pack 100 ft away from them.
It takes a boat that can go down in and up on without taking on boo coos of wa wa,no joke it scared the crap out of me in april when I had a 19 1/2 ft Ranger(which is unsinkable).One neds to know what their boat will do or not do,then use some caution anyway.
Two days out of that same week be like any other lake,1 1/2 -2 fters,with a small probability of one glass smooth day,ive seen it once in two years ,however in april they had several days of it again,but wasnt out myself.Its fairly rare.Like our 100 year flood few years back then a 1000 year one on top of that.One just cant count on mother nature to be that predictable,however that time of year can easily get a storm to blow in,just like you had at pickwick,yet worse here.

You can bet repair integrity is a major concern for me. The bad part is it will probably take me a couple of months to get my boat put back together like I want it – and I haven't even picked it up yet! Soooo… I'm gonna have precious little on the water time prior to Nationals to stress test it.

Right now I plan on picking my boat up sometime next week. Gotta pour some concrete support columns then let them set 3-4 days before proceeding. My plans are to pour the columns to day. Had to dig 6 – 10″ x 48″ holes in black gumbo that sticks to everything – with manual post hole diggers. So far I've dug 5 of'em got one more to dig this morning then make the pour this afternoon.

Well we often wondered how much wa wa would be left the next day,so far so good.
As for main lake conditions,yes they can turn ugly,40 mph wind gusting to 45 etc,4 fters my jag could still make it there,not with the alleyn at lat not in fast enough time,5 fters to 7 fters would take something like an LCB and someone lacking in the upstaitrs dept or lack of concern for safety.AS while you or your boat might handle it(Steve and I both have been out in it)(MY fault),the other dangers outweigh even the waves such high wind breaks barges loose,puts trees in the water,and that narrow funnel where the bridge is located is twice as bad as anything within 40 or so miles combined.
That is one of my boat tests go under the bridge if troller cant hold in a 3 mph current and 30 plus wind not acceptable,current one will in 40 mph wind on the lil alley,and still go forward.
Catch a fish stop the troller to unhppk it with pliers and your on the down side of the bridge that quick.
There will be a few who bring 18 ft boats some more still will even bring a 17 and at least one 16 ft will be there,nothing under 19 ft has any business out on it in any T where one has to stay on the water and has no say where they launch at.This lake kills 4 or 5 people a year,most of them in small boats pleaure boating or fishing,freeboard,is the key,not just length.Tritons like tr20 and 21 are the most common type boats here,other brands as well z21 etc notice the 20 and 21,my jag was a 22.
At a guess anything over 3 ft for you is really taking a GAMBLE,loaner boat or your own,and considering all ive heard about the brand id be afraid it would come apart at the seams in that stuff.
In short a lot can happen to keep one nearby,so pays to have an alternate plan of holes around here as well,like 3,4,7 which is a par 3,you can bogey 4 that time of year.

Thanks for the information! You can bet I'm gonna get me some in time for the nationals! You can bet I'm gonna try going sub-surface even in the shallow water. Sometimes…. the bigger fish are a tad less agressive and if you can drop something down to them they'll eat it up!


Right now on my list of things to try when I get there include:

Silver minnow w/black pork strip

Jitter bug

11″ worm w/ 1/16-1/32oz weight

5.5″ swim bait w/weighted hook

3.5″ swim bait w/weighted hook

5.5″ swim bait on 3/4-1oz jig head.


I will still try to located deeper fish if for no other reason than to be able to pull off the shallow fish and save them for the next day. Also…. sometimes the bigger fish 7-8-9#ers pull out of the shallows come morning as they've been feeding at night. "IF" that is the case and "IF" one can locate them…. could prove very interesting!

My personal best, 9#er, came on a Johnson silver minnow w/Uncle Josh black bass strip. Working it on the grass then letting it fall into holes in the grass. I haven't been able to find the bass strips from Uncle Josh for about 10 years and I haven't thrown that combo in about 7-8 years. A black 4″ finess worm should work as a replacement for the bass strip although it certainly won't have the flutter produced by the bass strip.


I chunk a lot of different stuff prefishing but come tournament time – you'll find me rooting around in that zip lock bag!Laugh

I haven't, and it really sucks that I haven't.  But I really need to try other lures.  I've got a ton of other bass lures in the boat and pretty much all of the lures I've been using could fit into one ZipLock bag…

That hole you talking about…. Have you ever tried a Jitter Bug there. I used to fish similar areas on Santee Cooper when I lived in S.C. and the jitter bug was a killer bait. I still use it from time to time today. Told a guy this year I was chunking a jitter but, had a blow up on it but caught the fish following up with a fluke. He couldn't believe I was throwing a jitter bug. His words "Man, I haven't thrown a jitter bug in years. They are flat fish gitters around grass/pads if you have any room at all to work them.
