African Quest - Part 1

What hunter looking down the barrel of his or her rifle, hasn't at one point or another, envisioned the prey to be an African lion, or maybe a sleek leopard? Yes, a dream to be on an African Safari!

In my case that dream became a reality in May of 2001. It was then that I left to go on a genuine African Safari. Even the words “African Safari” flood the mind with visions of tall grass, big-tusked bull elephants and a pride of roaring lions with its huge majestic black-mane leader standing as the king that he is!

Little did I know at that time, that my dream was the beginning of a 13 month quest. It was my dream to complete the challenge of taking the African dangerous game Big Six, elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, cape buffalo, lion and leopard. This endeavor was going to lead me through tall swaying brown grass, hundreds of ripping thorn bushes, over rock strewn hills and vertical mountains, into surgery and a 6 day hospital stay to repair a broken ankle and the taking of approximately 35 fantastic African trophies!

Read More Here...

Lake Delton Restoration

In June of 2008, southern Wisconsin was devastated by record rainfall. Rivers flowed well over their normal banks, field after field stood knee-deep or more in water, and roadbeds were washed out. But one thing that stood out head and shoulders above all the destruction was when the dike formed by 400 foot stretch of County Highway A let go. Not only did this disrupt traffic in the area, when the highway went away, so did Lake Delton!

Five homes were destroyed, with three of them simply floating away! In less than two hours, most of the lake had drained away, leaving behind over 200 acres of a muddy, soupy mess.

Read More Here...

Blooper Reels

Steve is a lucky guy. He’s fulfilled a dream of having his own outdoor television show. I, on the other hand, pull the short straw far too often.

You see, I have the same dream. Yet, if you were to turn on the TV and watch my show, it would seem like it was just a thirty minute blooper reel.

Read More Here...

Tis Far Better to Give...

Sure, it’s part of an old saying, but when you think about it, it’s really true. And in this case, it’s the absolute truth! It all started almost a year ago, when I was having a cup of coffee with Dick Busha of Little Lakes Ranch, a whitetail preserve in Irma, Wisconsin. He casually mentioned that he would like to host a disabled war vet on a whitetail hunt, but he was having a hard time getting it put together.

Read More Here...

A Father's Worst Nightmare!

Bears have never been a stranger to me. I was chased by one for a short bit when I was 17 years old. I was the young kid who was volunteered to go through the thickest swamps during deer drives. There was a time when my uncle, who was to the right of me in some more open timber, yelled that there were deer running towards me. I jumped up on a mound of a deadfall because it was the only way I was going to be able to see over the junk I was walking through, and sure enough, several does ran past my location. After they had passed, I was about to climb down the snow-covered mound that was created by the roots of an overturned tree.

Hunter or Hunted?

The Rainbow Lake Wilderness area; the best thing Bill Clinton ever did! Eleven-odd square miles of big woods country in Bayfield County in between Delta and Drummond Wisconsin. This is where I call home when it comes to hunting. This is also where the wolf calls its dining room when it comes to eating.

This is a short story of my encounter with wolves that haunts me to this day, and it happened last fall.

Read More Here

Secret Weapon Lures Invitational

Sixty anglers assembled in a pre-dawn drizzle at Goose Pond Colony’s courtesy docks. Just enough wind was blowing out of the south to put a chop on Guntersville Lake. Overcast skies held promise of a good topwater bite well up into the morning, but many there chaffed under the delayed dawn. On this lake, big bass are up shallow, feeding along weed lines and on the banks until light drives them under the cover of grass mats and docks, and the anglers were hoping to take advantage of the early morning feeding time to fill their livewells early.

Read more here: Invitational
